5 Books with tv shows/movies you never knew about

Updated: Feb 2, 2022

1. The Miniaturist, novel by Jessie Burton. This is a fantastic novel set in 19th century Amsterdam. It has elements of mystery, passion and rivalry. The overall theme of the book is secrecy and the lack thereof. If you like moody period pieces, this is the book for you! It was turned into a TV miniseries in 2017 by BBC, and stars my favorite actress of all time- Anya Taylor Joy!

2. Brave New World, novel by Aldous Huxley. This was on every AP English student's summer reading list, but I’m bringing it back due to the recent sci-fi craze. It is set in dystopian "New London" and has themes of sex, numbness, class structure and harmful capitalist ideologies, among many other things. It was turned into a Peacock series with 9 episodes in 2020. One of the main characters is played by Joseph Morgan, aka Claus from the Vampire Diaries! Sadly it will not be returning for a second season.

3. The Woman in the Window, novel by A.J. Finn. This phycological thriller will have you questioning everything you've been reading… literally. The narrator is frustratingly unreliable. There are elements of alcoholism, mental illness and murder (?). It was turned into an original Netflix film in 2021, starring Amy Adams.

4. Stargirl, YA novel by Jerry Spinelli. Everyone should read this book regardless of how old you are. It is the beautiful coming of age story of a boy who falls in love with Stargirl- a young girl who is unapologetically herself. Disney released a film adaptation in 2020, staring the beautiful Grace VanderWaal. There is also a second book in this series- Love, Stargirl.

5. The Woman in Cabin 10, novel by Ruth Ware. This is one to look out for! If you continue to read my blog, you will soon find out that Ruth Ware novels are my newest obsession. Ware is a British author, so all her novels take place in England or Europe. This is my favorite book of her's, so far. It is deliciously thrilling, and the setting is captivating: a cruise ship in the fjords of Norway! Currently, it is in the stages of pre-production.
