5 movies/tv shows where coffee takes centerstage

Grab a cup of coffee and the remote… Here's a list of my favorite coffee-centric movies and tv shows. Happy watching!

1. Promising Young Woman

In Promising Young Woman, the main character Cassie works in a coffee shop called "Make Me Coffee." There are a few ways in which the shop plays a key role in the movie. First, her boss Gail is one of her best friends and the person she trusts the most. Almost all of their conversations take place in the shop. Second, this is where Cassie meets her boyfriend Ryan. During their first time meeting, Cassie spits in Ryan's coffee which he proceeds to drink. This scene has become iconic and was even played during the Oscars presentation of the movie! Lastly, during one of the final scenes of the movie, Gail finds Cassie's broken heart necklace in the coffee shop's register. It was purposefully left there by Cassie as a farewell gift and a reminder to keep her memory alive.

2. Gilmore Girls

In Stars Hollow, "Luke's Diner" is a focal point. The two main characters- mother and daughter- Lorelai and Rory, are shown here often conversing over a cup of coffee. It is widely joked among fans of the show that Lorelai has a coffee addiction, as she is always craving caffeine to make it through her hectic day. Additionally, Luke, the owner of the diner, and Lorelai become long-term boyfriend and girlfriend throughout the show. The diner hosts multiple important scenes including the first time viewers meet Lorelai and Rory, a proposal (technically two, if you count Luke's method of distraction) and a Thanksgiving dinner.

3. Meet Joe Black

This movie is a young Brad Pitt gem. It is a romance drama that follows the life of a man who dies and is used as a vessel for Death. Minutes before dying, the man meets a woman named Susan in a coffee shop, where they instantly fall in love. Once he becomes Death, he is quickly renamed "Joe Black" (a coffee reference in itself), and the two continue their romance where Susan searches for the feeling they "found in the coffee shop." Susan and Joe's "meet-cute" over a cup of coffee is iconic and a favorite among film critics. The two mirror their coffee preparing and drinking- a sugar pour, a spoon stir and a sip- representing their instant connection.

4. Twin Peaks

Special Agent Dale Cooper is called into the town of Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of high-schooler, Laura Palmer. In this small town, Agent Cooper finds himself frequenting the local hangout, "The Double R Diner." Here he drinks an absurd amount of coffee and often indulges in a slice of pie. He is also shown drinking coffee in the office and in other locations such as the Great Northern Hotel and the Black Lodge. Whether Cooper's coffee drinking is the effect of a caffeine addiction, being a workaholic, or is some type of "Signifier of Virtue" will never be known.

5. Game of Thrones

Imagine: it's a cold day in Winterfell, and to warm up, you go to the local Starbucks for a coffee... wait a minute. The inclusion of this show is not for what coffee adds to the scenes, but for how it distracts from them. In the final season of the show, the production crew was infamously called out for failing to remove a Starbucks cup from one of the scenes taking place in Winterfell. Obviously, the coffee cup stuck out like a sore thumb among the medieval-themed sets and props. While it was widely joked as to who was to blame for the cup, Sophie Turner stated in an interview it was her co-star Emilia Clark! See if you can spot it in the fourth episode of season six.
