I enjoy local bookstores as much as any other bookworm… but man, do I love Barnes & Noble! The people are nice, the coffee is good and the staff recommendations are great. So, I dedicated this entire post to highlighting some recommendations from my local B&N at the Streets at Southpoint! Read to the end to see which book I chose, and let me know any book recommendations you have in the comments below!
Coming-of-Age
The Shiner, by Amy Jo Burns
"On a lush mountaintop trapped in time, two women vow to protect each other at all costs - and one young girl must defy her father to survive."
Historical Fiction
Her heart For a Compass, by Sarah Ferguson
"A bold and thoughtful story about a rebellious woman finding herself in an age of astounding technological change and great social unrest."
Sci-Fi
Winter's Orbit, by Everina Maxwell
"Royal embarrassment, Prince Kiev must enter a political marriage to his cousin's widower - and suspected murderer - if the treaty between the empire and a rebellious vassel planet is to hold. This sets off a chain of events that uncovers political intrigue and perhaps true love. Great for fans of Red, White & Royal Blue and Star Wars."
Dystopian
The School for Good Mothers, by Jessamine Chan
"In this taut, explosive debut, one lapse in judgment lands a young mother in a government reform program where custody of her child hangs in the balance."
Fantasy
The City We Became, by N.K. Jemisin
"All great cities are alive - and it's New York's time to be born. Avatars from each of the boroughs will have to come together if they, and the city, are to survive."
Mystery/Thriller
And Then There Were None, by Agatha Christie
"Ten guests arrive at a remote island mansion for a party, but soon realize no one knows where their hosts are - or who they are. Accused of murder and sentenced to die, a tense hunt for an unknown murderer ensues - one in their midst. The queen of mystery at her best."
Horror
The Whispering Dead, by Darcy Coates
"Woman wakes up in the graveyard of a small town with no memory of her past and being hunted by an armed group of strangers. Comes to find she can also communicate with the dead. Start of a new series."
Ultimately, I went with Agatha Christie's, And Then There Were None. It is a rainy day here in Chapel Hill, so the obvious choice of book is a moody, dark thriller! I have read many of Christie's novels, and she truly is the "Queen of Mystery." So... I am excited to read and report back to everyone next week!
